Taijiquan

Taiji (or taijiquan, tai chi chuan) is an old Chinese meditative exercise which is known to have positive health effects and which is suitable for everyone regardless of age or gender. The fundamental exercises of Taiji are the forms whose serene movements teach relaxation, improve balance, make the body stronger and more flexible as well as improve the coordination of the body and mind. For example, Taiji exercise is a safe and effective way to treat neck and back problems.

Taiji's roots are in combat skill and on a more advanced level it is also suitable for self defense. For this purpose Taiji has a unique Tuishou ("push hands") pair training method. Taiji also contains exercises for numerous weapon skills, including the sword, saber, stick and spear.

Wade-Giles: Tai chi ch'uan, taichi
